International Driving Permits

Requirements for driving with Ridee outside your home country

Learn about International Driving Permit requirements when booking Ridee trips outside your home country.

Why an International Driving Permit (IDP) May Be Required

When booking a Ridee trip outside your home country, some regions may require you to present an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your valid driver's license.

This ensures that your license can be easily read and verified by hosts and local authorities in the country where you're renting.

Your IDP doesn't replace your license; it simply acts as a translation and verification tool to make your travels smoother and compliant with local laws.

Trips Within Ridee's Operating Countries

Below are the IDP requirements depending on where your trip takes place:

Trips in Ghana and Other African Regions

If your driver's license was issued outside the country where you're booking your trip, you'll need a valid permanent license from your home country.

If your license isn't in English or the local language, you must also provide an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation of your license.

Trips in the United States

If your license was issued outside the U.S., Ridee requires you to present a valid home-country driver's license.

An IDP is not mandatory in most U.S. states, but it can help avoid misunderstandings with local authorities.

Keep in mind that your IDP cannot be used as a substitute for your license.

Trips in the United Kingdom

If you hold a non-UK driver's license, you may drive in the UK using your home-country license for up to one year from your date of arrival.

After that, local laws may require you to apply for a UK license depending on your country of origin.

An IDP is recommended if your license isn't issued in English.

Trips in Canada

For guests with non-Canadian licenses, Ridee requires a valid permanent license from your home country.

Depending on the province, you might also be asked to show an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation of your license for verification.

Remember: your IDP supplements, but does not replace, your original license.

Trips in Europe (Including France and Other EEA Countries)

If you're driving in France or another European Economic Area (EEA) country, your license must meet local requirements.

You'll need either:

  • A valid license written in French or one of the EU languages
  • An official translation of your license
  • Or an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your license is not in a recognized format

In France specifically, drivers must have held a full license for at least two years before booking with Ridee.

How to Obtain an International Driving Permit

You can usually apply for an IDP through your national or regional automobile association (e.g., AAA, CAA, FIA, AIT).

Processing times vary, from same-day issuance in some countries to several weeks in others. So it's best to apply early before booking your Ridee trip abroad.

Important Notes

  • Always carry both your original driver's license and your IDP when driving abroad.
  • Your IDP is valid only when presented with your physical driver's license.
  • Digital versions or screenshots are not accepted by hosts or local authorities.
